“Rowland Fellow Cushner Seeks Innovative Transformation” in The Other Paper - March, 13, 2014

SBHS LogoBig Picture Program Coordinator and Rowland Fellow Jason Cushner was profiled in The Other Paper, the online community newspaper for South Burlington, for his work in organizing Neighborhood Learning Conversations throughout South Burlington in people’s homes and places of work. The Neighborhood Learning Conversations are all focused around envisioning the future of South Burlington High School, and specifically what the graduate expectations should be as the school moves toward proficiency-base graduation requirements (PBGRs). Jason is the perfect person to lead this charge, as we graduate Big Picture students based on PBGRs. Click here to read the article.

 

South Burlington High School MLK Day of Service Event – Coverage on WCAX - Jan 21, 2014

Big Picture student Kindra Lundie and Advisor Christine Lundie helped organize the first annual student-led MLK Day of Service at South Burlington High School along with PACT (Parents and Adults Celebrating Children and Teens). Over 100 people (80 of whom were students coming in on their day off from school) came to participate in a morning of discussion and service, writing cards to children in the Vermont Children’s Hospital. Many SBHS staff and students attended (To the left is a photo of Ryan, Christine and Kindra in attendance at the event). Olivia Plunkett, Big Picture SB graduate is a Making a Difference Scholar at Clark University in The Addison Eagle, November 14, 2013 and the @Clark Newsletter, November 6, 2013

Olivia Plunkett of Starksboro, VT and graduate of Big Picture South Burlington is enrolled at Clark University this fall as a Making a Difference Scholar, one of five entering students to be awarded this Clark scholarship for outstanding commitment. While attending high school in Vermont, Plunkett pursued her interest in the art of sustainable farming. She interned at a local farm, contributing her labor in many aspects and helping create sustainable practices. Plunkett traveled to Ghana four different times to participate in a range of service projects (read about her Ghana trip here!). “Big Picture Students Learn Real-World Skills” in The Other Paper – October 3, 2013

Susie Merrick, a Big Picture South Burlington Board Member, recently contributed a wonderful article to South Burlington’s The Other Paper about our real-world learning event on September 6th, in which members of the community came into BPSB to give students feedback on their resumes and cover letters, and to practice in-person and phone interviews in preparation for students finding internship sites for the Fall Term. Click here to read the article.

Dr. Steve Perry Delivers Keynote Address at the Big Bang 2013 in Providence, RI

The “Big Bang” is the annual event hosted by Big Picture Learning to bring educators together who are working in Big Picture Learning centers, trying to form new Big Picture Schools, or who are trying to incorporate Big Picture Learning into their schools. Two of our Big Picture South Burlington Advisors, Jim Shields and Christine Lundie attended the event in Providence, Rhode Island this summer. Click here to watch the video.
